Historical news about Rolli Palaces UNESCO heritage

Moneglia, which has origins in Roman times, has historically developed an intense relationship with the Republic of Genoa and its nobility which gave rise to the grandiose system of the Palazzi dei Rolli recognized in 2006 among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
2016 marks the first tenth anniversary of the inscription of the site "Genoa: The Strade Nuove and the System of the Palazzi dei Rolli" in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
In the 16th century, the most powerful families of Genoa had numerous palaces of great splendor designed and built according to the renewed Renaissance models, which found official recognition in 1576. On that date, a Decree of the Senate of Genoa promulgated the list of public buildings or "Rolli" of particular value, forcing the noble owners to give hospitality to visiting diplomatic delegations.
In addition to the new streets of Via Garibaldi, Via Cairoli and Via Balbi, the area included in the UNESCO inscription also extends to a part of the ancient center of Genoa (Via Lomellini, Piazza Fossatello, Via San Luca, Piazza Banchi a stone's throw from the '
Genova's aquarium) where there are some of the most significant examples of the Rolli palaces built in the medieval fabric.
An important reform of the oligarchic organization of the Republic also took place in the sixteenth century.
Since the 14th century, the Genoese Hotels were groups of families established with the aim of reconciling disputes and arguments, materially helping the members and perpetuating their name and tradition, in the superior interests of the city and the Republic.
The families who entered a hotel took the surname, which often coincided with that of the most powerful family (such as Grimaldi or Doria).
The institute acquired a new meaning in 1528 with the reform promoted by Andrea Doria, becoming the cornerstone of the political organization: the families endowed with political rights were grouped into 28 Alberghi, transformed from voluntary aggregations into public law groups.
The noble Moneglia family, moved to Genoa in 1526 and admitted to the Genoese patriciate, entered the Albergo dei Giustiniani, to which eight doges of the Republic and a large number of senators and magistrates belonged.
In 1569 Genoa thus had a doge of Moneglia origin, Paolo Giustiniani-Moneglia.
In Genoa, one of the main streets of the historic center and a small square that opens in the middle of the street overlooked by the Palazzi dei Rolli are dedicated to the Giustinianis: Palazzo Marcantonio Giustiniani and Palazzo Vincenzo Giustiniani Banca.
The Rolli palaces still today partly belong to private individuals, while some buildings have become the headquarters of public offices and banks. It is possible to take part in one of the guided tours organized by the Municipality of Genoa,
